MONEL UNS N05500 seamless pipe, also known as 2.4375 in the European standard, is a nickel-copper-based alloy pipe renowned for its exceptional resistance to corrosion and high mechanical strength. Primarily composed of approximately 63% nickel, 28% copper, and small additions of iron, manganese, and sulfur, this alloy combines the best properties of nickel and copper to create a material that thrives in harsh environments. Developed to withstand severe corrosive media, such as seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and salt-laden atmospheres, it adheres to international standards like ASTM B163 and ASME SB-163, ensuring consistent quality and performance.
The seamless manufacturing process eliminates weld joints, enhancing structural integrity and reducing potential failure points. This makes MONEL N05500 pipe ideal for applications where reliability and longevity are critical, even under high-pressure or temperature fluctuations. Its non-magnetic nature and good ductility further expand its usability in specialized industrial settings.
Superior Corrosion Resistance: Exceptionally resistant to seawater, steam, and various acidic solutions, including hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids at moderate concentrations. It outperforms many stainless steels in chloride-rich environments, making it a top choice for marine and offshore applications.
High Strength & Durability: Maintains excellent mechanical properties across a wide temperature range, from sub-zero conditions to 400°C. It offers high tensile strength and fatigue resistance, ensuring long service life in dynamic loading scenarios.
Thermal & Electrical Conductivity: Combines good thermal conductivity with moderate electrical resistance, suitable for heat exchanger applications where efficient heat transfer is required without compromising corrosion resistance.
Ease of Fabrication: Despite its high alloy content, MONEL N05500 can be readily formed, welded, and machined using standard techniques, reducing manufacturing complexities and costs.
Marine Engineering: Used in seawater intake systems, ship hull piping, and offshore platforms due to its resistance to biofouling and chloride-induced corrosion.
Chemical Processing: Handles aggressive chemicals in reactors, distillation columns, and pipelines, particularly in hydrofluoric acid production and organic synthesis.
Aerospace & Defense: Employed in fuel systems and hydraulic lines for aircraft and military equipment, where exposure to salt spray and extreme temperatures is common.
Power Generation: Suitable for condenser tubes and boiler feedwater systems in coastal power plants, minimizing maintenance caused by corrosion.
Q: Is MONEL N05500 suitable for use in hydrogen sulfide environments?
A:Yes, it exhibits good resistance to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in non-oxidizing conditions, making it suitable for sour gas applications with proper material selection.
Q: What is the maximum operating temperature for this alloy pipe?
A:It can reliably operate up to 400°C in continuous service, though mechanical properties may vary slightly at higher temperatures.
Q: Does MONEL N05500 require special welding procedures?
A:While standard GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) processes work, using a nickel-copper filler metal (e.g., ERNiCu-7) is recommended to maintain corrosion resistance.
Q: Can this pipe be used in potable water systems?
A:Yes, as it is non-toxic and does not leach harmful elements, making it safe for drinking water applications.

Being a nickel-copper based alloy, Monel K500 has excellent corrosion resistance properties. Although the Monel K500 Tube is similar to its Monel 400 counterpart, in terms of its corrosion resistance properties, the strength and hardness are properties that are significantly higher than the former. The Monel K500 Seamless Pipe is designed to be used in heat exchanger applications. Industries like oil and gas, or marine engineering use the ASME SB 163 UNS N05500 as they are able to hold out elevated temperatures, without getting corroded.
Alloy K-500 has approximately twice the tensile strength and triple the yield strength of Alloy 400. The strength of Alloy K-500 is maintained to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, but stays ductile and tough down to temperature of -400 degrees Fahrenheit. Alloy K-500 also stays non-magnetic to -200 degrees Fahrenheit. Additional characteristics of Alloy K-500 include outstanding corrosion resistance in a wide range of chemical and marine surroundings, from salts and alkalis, non-oxidizing acids to pure water. Alloy K-500 is non-magnetic and spark resistant.
Monel K500 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-copper alloy that combines the excellent corrosion resistance characteristic of Monel 400 with the added advantage of greater strength and hardness. These amplified properties, strength and hardness, are obtained by adding aluminum and titanium to the nickel-copper base and by a thermal processing used to effect precipitation, typically called age hardening or aging.
