Material Summary

The stainless steel alloys AISI 304 and AISI 304L are the best known and most widely used chromium-nickel steels. Due to their excellent corrosion resistance, high strength and low carbon content, these austenitic steels are particularly suitable for welding applications. They are seamless tubes made from 304 stainless steel and can therefore meet a wide range of industrial requirements.

304, 304H, and 304L all have the same nominal chromium and nickel content, and therefore have the same corrosion resistance, ease of processing, and weldability. The difference between 304, 304H, and 304L is the carbon content, which is >0.03, >0.05, and <0.03, respectively. 304H (UNS S30409) has a carbon content limited to 0.04–0.10%, which ensures optimal high-temperature strength. 304L (UNS 30403) has a carbon content limited to a maximum of 0.03%, which prevents sensitization during welding. 304 (UNS 30400) has a carbon content limited to a maximum of 0.08%. Therefore, 304 is not suitable for corrosive applications that require welding, such as: B. Tanks and pipes with corrosive solutions. Therefore, 304L is preferred. Since the carbon content is not at least 100%, 304H is not suitable for high temperature applications where optimum strength is required. Therefore, 304H is preferred. As a result, 304 is usually limited to bars made into parts that do not require welding, or thin sheets made into items that do not require welding, such as kitchen sinks or cookware.

Carbon content has a significant effect on room temperature strength. Therefore, the specified minimum tensile strength of 304L is 5 kpsi (34 MPa) less than that of 304 (515 MPa). However, nitrogen also has a significant effect on room temperature strength. Adding a small amount of nitrogen can produce 304L with the same tensile strength as 304. Therefore, almost all 304L is manufactured as dual certified 304/304L. This means that it meets the minimum carbon content of 304L while meeting the minimum tensile strength of 304.
